A Lady's Lesson: Lori Parkerson of Redeem
In a city filled to the brim with politicos, the Mid-City area has become a welcomed artistic mecca with hip restaurants, intriguing area artists, and chic boutiques. Lori Parkerson's store Redeem is a real gem providing cutting edge urban fashion to Washingtonians. The store itself is a beautiful space filled with vintage relics and aged murals throughout. The clothing is consistent and unlike anything offered in the area. Each piece is special and unique; a real work of art. Taking a modern tailored approach to traditional classics. Looking for a wardrobe change in the new year? Or a unique gift for that special someone? Stop by Redeem and you won't be disappointed.
I've been stopping in at Redeem for the last few years, and was thrilled when Ms. Parkerson took the time to sit down with me and answer a few questions about the story behind Redeem, style advice, and the three Redeem holiday must-haves.
1) What inspired you to open your store, Redeem?
Since high school it was a fantasy. I never pursued it but it was always in my spirit. Then I would always drive by this space on 14th Street and it suddenly went up for rent and I jumped on it. I think you could do something and possibly fail, but if you never try there is always that "what if" factor.
2) Why did you open the store in the 14th Street area?
I chose this area because it has a real sense of community, an artist community. It is such a special and unique area of the city. Opening up a new business is scary, but here there was this real feeling that I wasn't alone.
3) What does "Redeem" mean to you?
Redeem encapsulates the idea of making things new, that there is never a time limit on pursuing your dreams. Just like our slogan, " Never too late to change."
4) What men's designers do you like? And how do you pick clothing for the store?
I pick clothing that I respond to. It is a gut feeling. A few of the men’s designers that I like are Wrath Arcane and Religion which is a UK brand. I tend to gravitate towards things that are different or innovative. Clothing that is not easily accessible.
5) Do you have any style advice for men?
As far as style advice, I would tell men to go for things that catch their eye. Get a feel for it and see if you think it would work. When we have guys in the store, this is what we try to assist them with. You gravitate towards clothing for a reason. Try it on, and see if it works. There is no harm in trying something new.
6) What are three things at Redeem that should be on every Gent's Wishlist?
1) A slim pair of Corpus jeans because they look great on everyone.
2) A Religion black leather jacket.
3) The harness scarf from Wrath Arcane.
Modern James Dean, anyone? I want this in my stocking.
